The second generation (2006) - related to the Ford S-MAX and Galaxy MPVs and Mondeo family hatch, Land Rover Freelander, Jaguar X-Type and Volvo's own XC60 crossover and V70 estate - when launched was available with 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder, 3.2-litre six-cylinder and 4.4-litre eight-cylinder petrol engines and 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 2.4-litre five-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines.

After revisions in 2009, the S80's engine range comprises of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged (Ford EcoBoost) four-cylinder and 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol and 1.6-litre four-cylinder and 2.0-litre five-cylinder turbocharged and 2.4-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engines.

The 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol and 2.0-litre turbocharged and 2.4-litre twin-turbocharged five-cylinder diesel engines are available with Volvo's Geartronic automatic transmission, with the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine is available with a Ford/Getrag dual-clutch gearbox. All engines bar the 3.0-litre petrol come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard.

The 3.0-litre petrol and 2.4-litre diesel are available with AWD.

A BMW 3-Series competitor from Volvo. It is available with 1.6- (T4) and 2.0-litre (T5) turbocharged four-cylinder and 3.0-litre (T6) turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engines and 1.6-litre (DRIVe) four-cylinder and 2.0- (D3) and 2.4-litre (D5) five-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines. The T6 and the D5 are available with four-wheel-drive.
The S60 available with either a six-speed manual, a (Ford) six-speed DSG-esque Powershift dual-clutch gearbox (which is, according to UK press articles, better than VW Group's offering) and a six-speed Geartronic automatic.

A slightly more practical A6 from Audi to rival the Mercedes-Benz CLS. A 5-door hatchback (liftback), available with 2.8- (204PS) and 3.0-litre (300PS) six-cylinder petrol engines (the latter being supercharged) and a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine in three states of tune (204PS, 245PS and 315PS), with the most powerful engine having two turbochargers for extra oomph.

A high-performance variant - the S7 - is equipped with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder petrol engine; the same engine in fact, as the second generation Bentley Continental GT.

An estate (wagon) variant of the Volvo S60 to compete with the BMW 3-Series Touring. It comes with the same range of engines and transmissions as the S60, with the availability of AWD on the 3.0-litre petrol and 2.4-litre diesel: 1.6-, 2.0 and 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines and 1.6-, 2.0 and 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engines along with six-speed manual, Powershift (dual-clutch gearbox) and Geartronic transmissions. Power outputs vary from 115PS (DRIVe) - 304PS (T6) and top speeds from 118mph - 155mph.

A BMW 3-Series competitor from Alfa Romeo. It was available with 1.75-litre turbocharged (TBi), 1.8- and 2.2-litre four-cylinder and 3.2-litre (JTS) six-cylinder petrol engines and 1.9- and 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 2.4-litre five-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines (JTDm). The 3.2 JTS and the 2.4 JTDm were available with four-wheel-drive (Q4).

The 159 was available with either a six-speed manual, or on the 2.2-litre JTS petrol engine, a six-speed "Selespeed" semi-automatic gearbox.

Two black 3.2 JTS 159s featured in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace. Both were ultimately destroyed.
