ninja path

Derived from the Indonesian phrase "jalan ninja", this slang term refers to a way of life, motto, belief, or "dream" that guides them in achieving their goals.
Going to cinemas 10 times per year at this age of 21 is my ninja path to be allowed by parents to watch more mature (inappropriate) movies. BTW, once I turn 23, I'm going to be "old" if my parents still deem movies like Deadpool to be too inappropriate to me to watch.

coffee-and-couch phase

A slang expression describing the moment you find yourself drinking the same black coffee as your dad, marking the realization that you’re now considered "old", especially when still living at parents' home past your 23rd birthday. It highlights the irony of being too old for youthful independence while still in a transitional phase.
I took a sip of that bitter black coffee and suddenly felt like I was 30, still living with my parents at 23. Guess I’ve officially hit the coffee-and-couch phase!

short film funding

A slang term for movies, like Whiplash (2014), that struggle to secure substantial funding and are often created as short films to be submitted to film festivals first, aiming to gain recognition and support for full-length productions.
After years of pitching, my script ended up as a short film funding project—guess I’m in the short film game like those filmmakers behind Whiplash!

adult toy

Extending far beyond just dildos and sex toys, "adult toy" refers to any playful item or toy that adults enjoy using, regardless of whether it was originally intended for children. This can include anything from board games, adult collectibles, to LEGO sets that bring joy or entertainment to grown-ups.
After a long week, I finally pulled out my favorite adult toy—a classic LEGO set I used to play as a kid. Who knew nostalgia could be so much fun.

Whiplash

An eighteen-minute short film that follows the journey of an ambitious music student and an aspiring jazz drummer, capturing their intense relationship. This short film's success leads to it being expanded into a 108-minute feature film, exploring themes of ambition, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence in music.
After watching the short film Whiplash, I was blown away by how it perfectly captured the struggle of an aspiring drummer, and I couldn’t believe it got turned into a full-length feature.

Unlike late teens or early 20's, from the age of 23 onwards is considered "old" for someone who still has screen time limits imposed by their parents and is deemed too immature to watch movies like Deadpool. This term highlights the generational gap in perceptions of age and maturity.
At 23, I feel old when my parents still impose screen time limits and think Deadpool is too inappropriate for me, making me question if I'll ever really grow up in their eyes.

A term that combines the concepts of "evil", as seen in movies like Mean Girls, with the meanings of "definition" or "translation", and the mathematical concept of "average." This multifaceted word demonstrates the complexity of language and how context shapes meaning.
When my teacher asked for the mean of our test scores, I couldn’t help but think about how "mean" can also describe those girls from Mean Girls who seemed to define their social world by harshness.
