Cognitive Metabiases

Biases about biases themselves. These are systematic errors in how we perceive, judge, and attempt to correct for cognitive biases in ourselves and others. A key example is the Bias Blind Spot—the meta-bias of believing you are less biased than other people. Cognitive metabiases are why "knowing about biases" doesn't cure them; it often just gives you more sophisticated tools for self-deception.
Example: A CEO reads about groupthink and then vigilantly points it out in every team meeting, seeing dissent as healthy. However, they are blind to their own Cognitive Metabiases: their overconfidence bias in their ability to detect bias, and their reactance to any criticism, which they now dismiss as just "the team avoiding groupthink."

Cognitive Picking

The inherent, unconscious operation of the human brain to selectively attend to, remember, and process information that confirms existing beliefs, expectations, or emotional states (Confirmation Bias), while filtering out dissonant data. This is the biological and psychological root of all cherry-picking; our wetware is wired to be a prejudiced curator. We don't just pick facts; our perception itself is a picky editor.
Example: After buying a red Honda, you suddenly see red Hondas everywhere. This is Cognitive Picking. Your brain has tuned its perceptual filter to notice confirming instances (other red Hondas) while ignoring the thousands of other cars you pass. Your reality becomes a curated exhibit of your own recent choices.

Academic Picking

The scholarly malpractice of selectively citing only the literature, methodologies, or data that support one's hypothesis or theoretical allegiance, while ignoring or dismissing significant contrary work. This creates an artificial consensus within a publication or field, making a position appear more robust and uncontested than it is. It's cherry-picking with footnotes, using the veneer of academic rigor to disguise intellectual dishonesty.
Academic Picking Example: A psychologist writing a paper on the benefits of a strict parenting style cites ten studies showing correlations with high achievement, but academically picks by omitting five major, peer-reviewed studies linking the same style to increased anxiety and depression in children. The resulting literature review presents a skewed, non-representative "state of the field."

Logical Picking

The fallacy of constructing a logical argument (syllogism, deduction) that is formally valid but begins with premises that are themselves cherry-picked, biased, or arbitrarily defined to force a desired conclusion. It's the illusion of sound reasoning built on rigged foundations. You follow the rules of logic perfectly, but you started the game with a stacked deck of premises. The argument is valid, but not sound.
Logical Picking *Example: Premise 1 (Cherry-picked): Major cities run by Party X have high crime rates. Premise 2 (Arbitrary): High crime is the only metric of governance. Conclusion (Logically picked): Therefore, Party X is inherently bad at governance. The logic is flawless, but the premises ignore cities' unique contexts and all other governance metrics, like education or infrastructure.*

Theory of All Facts Are Cherry-Pickable

The formal sociological and epistemological principle that because human knowledge is vast and fragmented, and because all narratives require selection, any political, ideological, or marketing campaign can and will build its case on a foundation of carefully chosen, verifiable facts. The theory states that the battle is never over "facts vs. lies," but over which curated subset of facts achieves cultural dominance and gets woven into the accepted story. Truth becomes a matter of narrative victory, not just verification.
Example: The Theory of All Facts Are Cherry-Pickable explains how two historians can both use authentic archives to "prove" diametrically opposed views of an empire—one highlighting its architectural achievements (cherry-picked facts of grandeur), the other its slave ledgers (cherry-picked facts of brutality). Both are factual, but the chosen narrative defines the "truth."

All Facts Are Cherry-Pickable

The cynical but often accurate observation that for any complex issue, a person can selectively present isolated data points ("cherry-picked" facts) to construct a compelling but deeply misleading narrative that supports their pre-existing bias. This isn't a claim that all facts are false, but that their power comes from context and omission. A single statistic, a lone study, or an individual anecdote can be wielded as a definitive "truth-totem" while ignoring the vast forest of contradictory evidence surrounding it. In the information age, data isn't power; curation is.
Example: A climate change denier points to a single cold day in July and declares, "See? No global warming! All facts are cherry-pickable." They've plucked one irrelevant data point from a planet-sized dataset of rising temperatures, using a "fact" to fabricate a falsehood. It's the weaponization of the technically-true to obscure the actually-true.

Fallacy Fallacy (Argumentum ad Logicam)

The formal meta-fallacy of concluding that a proposition is false simply because the argument presented for it contains a logical fallacy. This is a critical thinking fail state: you correctly spot flawed reasoning (e.g., an appeal to emotion, a post hoc correlation) but then incorrectly assume the conclusion is therefore untrue. A bad argument for a claim doesn't automatically make the claim wrong; it just means you're still waiting for a good argument.
Fallacy Fallacy (Argumentum ad Logicam) Example: "He argues we should help the poor because it makes us feel good. That's just an appeal to emotion, a fallacy. Therefore, we should not help the poor." This commits the Fallacy Fallacy. The poor might still desperately need help; the speaker has just shot down one weak justification, not disproven the need for the action itself.
