Mitcham

Mitcham is a - perhaps unexpectedly - rather picturesque small town located within Greater London. It's got some genuinely pretty period architecture - for example see photos below of the town's churches and "White House" (no not that one). The area has perhaps been a tad looked down on in the past (often by people who have never been there). But it's smartening up, and its innate visual appeal - especially in its older parts - makes it a perfectly pleasant, green little area to live in or visit. And local borough council plans for town centre improvements will provide a further spur towards it realising its full potential before long.
Question one: What sort of people would Mitcham appeal to?
-- Those who appreciate pretty buildings and plenty of green open spaces (such as Mitcham Common and Mitcham Fair Green).

Question two:Where is it precisely?
-- It's a mile or two further out of central London than Wimbledon, just within the Surrey side of the London/Surrey border. But officially it IS in London, as it's in a London borough (Merton). It is exactly eight miles from Charing Cross (the official central point of London).

Sutton

Sutton is an attractive middle class town in outer south London with easy access to central London. It has a Surrey post code, but has officially been part of London since 1965. The town has a high-achieving state Grammar school for boys, and a private school for girls. It is a regional shopping hub with major stores and plenty of restaurants and coffee houses.

The town has quite an arty side with a theatre and a lot of outdoor, public art. These include two sculptures, an armillary, and three building-height murals - one of Sutton's twin towns, one a heritage mural mosaic showing nearby sites of historical importance and, last but not least for fans of neo soul, one of Erykah Badu, no less.
Sutton is a cool town.

Worcester Park

Fabulous area of outer London mainly located in the London Borough of Sutton, although part of it is in the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames. It's in Travelcard zone 4 and about 8 miles from central London. There's a good range of restaurants including sushi in the main shopping street, along with coffee houses and a branch of ubercool Waitrose.

Our American friends will feel very much at home here, as there is an awesome 1,000 home executive estate of NEW ENGLAND style houses. It's won many awards for its architecture and beautiful landscaping.

Sutton

The town in outer London in which the Rolling Stones were spotted by a notable music promoter in 1963 during an early gig at the then Red Lion public house (now the Winning Post) in Sutton High Street. The rest is history.

But, I hear you say, there must more to the town than *just* that. Well, yes: Sutton is just ten miles from London's Charing Cross, and is a very leafy and pleasant place to be. Much of Sutton was build during Victorian times, so the architecture has the character of that era. In recent years there's been something of an influx of young professionals, whose presence has helped lead to the current plethora of trendy restaurants, stylish coffee houses and cool bars, like All Bar One.
PERSON 1: Are there any "hidden gem" areas in and around London?

SAGE: There were a few years ago, and I'd have said SUTTON was one. But it's not hidden any more.

Belmont

Beautiful little village area at the southern end of the town of Sutton in outer London/north Surrey. Belmont has its own small railway station, while Sutton's mainline station is only a mile north. There are several restaurants in the main village street, and the residential roads off contain character houses from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
People who live in Belmont are lucky. I wish I lived there.

Cheam

Cheam is a smart area of outer London on the boundary with Surrey. It is in the much admired and very leafy London Borough of Sutton. It has at its centre a beautiful village and park. The park contains a mansion called Nonsuch. There are numerous trendy restaurants, gift shops and coffee houses in the village, along with a branch of Waitrose.

Cheam is very much the place to be for stylish people of all ages. It is truly EXCELLENT.
