When you press a button at the top of your phone (eg back), and a notification pops up in the motion of pressing the button that you you accidentally press it and open something you don’t want to open.

A FB notification you don't really pay attention to when you receive it, because it's not the notification you were expecting in response to you
Zoe: Hey, I asked a question on our class Facebook group. Did you see it?
Janet: No. That was probably a gray notification for me because no one liked my new Facebook status.
Zoe: Loser.
Janet: Hey! Admit it! Everyone prefers likes on their Facebook posts!

to comment on on a large amount of someones myspace/facebook pictures, therefor giving them a lot of notifications/ pictures to check, pissing them off.
I will "notification-rape" him by adding pointless comments to all of his " mexico 08" pictures, which will leave him pretty fucking pissed.

When a smart phone gets so many facebook notifications, texts, emails, or BBMs, etc. in a small amount of time that the battery dies. This can be done by one person or a group of people either intentionally or not.
Girl: Asshole you straight liked my profile. My phone received Death by notification after receiving 98 notifications. I didn't realize this until my car was broken down at the side of the road.
Further after the phone died i continued receiving notifications as well.

An extremely annoying occurrence on facebook. A ghost notification is what happens when you click a notification, and it takes you to the appropriate place, but the notification still stays there, so you click it again, but nothing different happens. You get your hopes all up for another notification and it's just another dumb ghost notification.

When a popular social media app clearly indicates that you have an unread notification, only to reveal there are no new notifications. The only people affected by this are people that never get mentions or RTs, because important people always have hundreds of unread messages at any given time. The Phantom message is a technique the service uses to make you feel popular, even though nobody reads your lame-ass tweets.
