A man responsible for naming a newborn baby that is not his own. This applies to first or middle names. Like a godfather, but better. The namefather may pass out cigars after the birth or teach the child things their parents have no time for.
Bill is my son Ari's namefather. Without him, my son would not have his middle name. He is to be commended.
