hit the ditch

The act of an out-of-control vehicle sliding off an icy road into a roadside ditch. Also used to describe a vehicle that has done so, and is now stuck in deep snow.
I drove through a blizzard yesterday on the highway. I must have seen a dozen cars that hit the ditch on the way.
