hair's breadth

By a tiny margin. Literally, the breadth (width) of a hair.

Often written as hare's breath, which really makes no sense. Does anyone have any idea what the breath of a bunny is like? Is it a soft puff, a short inhalation?

"She beat her closest opponent over the finish line by a hair's breadth."

"He was a hair's breadth away from graduating when disaster struck."

A phrase to say when you're overwhelmed with work, stressed, on a strict deadline, etc.
A way to express being extremely busy or to convey a sense of urgency.

"Yes, I need that information now, we're on deadline here and my hair's on fire"

Finer than a dog's hair split three ways

Means that something is very fine, or that you feel excellent. If someone asks how you feel and you simply say "fine", you might just be saying it out of convention. Adding the "dog's hair split three ways" shows that you actually mean it.

Another form of the expression is "finer than a frog's hair split three ways", although literal frogs do not have hair.

You: How are you doing today?

Me: Why, I'm doing finer than a dog's hair split three ways!

Swimmer's Hair

Extremely dry and damaged hair due to continuous exposure to chlorine and extended hours in the pool. Sometimes even green because of the chlorine.

Mike had such bad swimmer's hair that it felt like hay.
