grand guignol

A style of morbid, French, experimental theater popular among the hip in the late eighteen-hundreds to the mid twentieth-century.
'The Theatre of the Vampires' in 'Interview with the Vampire' was straight grand guignol. Kirsten Dunst's comment of, 'How avant-garde,' was priceless.
