Sufis are mystics that generally follow the spiritual muslim tradition. Their name is said to derive from the Arabic word for wool" Suuf"; but, in meaning it seems more related to The Sophists, a philosophical movement designating seekers of Truth, lovers of Wisdom.
Sufis and Sophists are really the same, although sufism today is recognized more as a spiritual path than a philosophical tradition.
Uneducated, unlearned people long ago may have heard the word Sophist and associated it with the Arabic word for wool, but it seems more related to the Greek word sophistēs, formed from the noun sophia, ‘wisdom’ or ‘learning'.
