Ecological Thoreauvianism

A philosophy applying Henry David Thoreau’s principles—simplicity, self‑reliance, close observation of nature, and resistance to unjust institutions—to ecological thought. It advocates for living in deliberate contrast to consumerist, extractive society, focusing on local ecosystems, low‑impact living, and direct experience of the natural world. Ecological Thoreauvianism rejects both techno‑optimism and despair, instead seeking a meaningful, grounded existence that defends wild places through witness and presence. It draws from Walden’s insight that in nature, one can discover values obscured by civilisation.
Example: “She left the city to restore a small wetland, keeping a journal of each bird returned—ecological Thoreauvianism, finding resistance not in protest but in attentive, humble care.”
