1. A metaphorical food used to describe something that is outrageously angsty, Emo, Gothic, or gloomy in nature.

2: The feeling in your stomach when you feel miserable (i.e. you feel like you've eaten an "Angst Sandwich).

1: Dude, Interview with a Vampire was such an Angst Sandwich!

2: I feel terrible after my girlfriend told me she was dumping me, it's like I've eaten an Angst Sandwich!

A derogatory term for creative works that use trauma, suffering, or emotional distress purely for shock value without thematic direction, character development, or narrative purpose. Unlike stories where suffering reveals character, themes, or growth, angst slop relies on repeated misery without escalation, contrast, or meaning.

The term is frequently misused by netizens to dismiss any emotionally heavy or tragic story, especially by audiences who struggle with subtext, character-driven narratives, or slow-burn emotional/psychological arcs. Rather than saying “I don’t understand this” or “this isn’t for me,” netizens label things as “angst slop” to invalidate it.

shipper angst

Contrived and torturously convoluted writing of a TV show’s characters’ relationships, done simply for the sake of interjecting more ‘drama’ into the series.

Shipper angst typically includes elements of lose, conflict, jealousy, and both real and perceived infidelities, that adversely affect and influence the thoughts and actions the show’s characters. While these elements are standard ingredients of good drama, their overuse is unmistakable evidence of the kind of hack writing that reduces TV series drama to mere melodrama.

I stopped watching ‘Battlestar Galactica’ in the middle of the third season. I just couldn’t stand watching any more of that silly shipper angst.

soft angst 

Soft angst is usually used in fanfic. Angst in fanfic usually means the story is sad or depressing, however soft angst is usually used in a not so sad story.

That story had some soft angst. It was sad but not to the point where it made me sad.

Pent up anger or annoyance, when you have not had any emotional or sexual contact or sorts with the opppsite sex. Many teens feel this after some time of not seeing their significant other or not being able to spend time with them due to a tremendous amount of homework or family obligations.

The weekend was a bust, the time I spent with my boyfriend was lousey and interrupted. We saw a terrible movie in a crowded theater and got stuck having dinner at a family friend's house. On top of not seeing him all week and not being able to show affection, hug him, or make out with him, I had some serious pent up sexual angst so we have planned a night for just the two of us this weekend
