Originally created by the now dead channel Thatistheplan a.k.a anthony fantano where he would review the hottest and spicy maymays in an absurd and ironic fashion. After the deletion of the channel, the Meme Review has since then been brought back to life and popularised by youtuber Pewdiepie.
Generic Hipster 1: Yeah Pewdiepie's meme reviews are great but they will never be as genius as Anthony Fantano's

This is the real origin of the term: dank is a slang word from SF bay area that meant 'good weed, it's been around at least a decade.. eventually it just came to mean 'cool' in SF Bay Area Slang.. so seeing that tech culture emanates from the bay area people just probly started saying "dank meme" as a joke and others started using it ironically or unironically whether they knew or didnt know the origin. It's still a pretty dank word I use it all the time.
Original example as Bay Area Slang:
"Yo lets go score us some dank from that guy you just met"
"Ay this weed is dank as fuck, where you get it?"
Contemporary example to refer to memes
"NORMIES CANT INTO DANK MEMES REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
"I like that meme, it's pretty dank"

when you make a meme that is fire as fuck, and you post it on a social media site and someone saves it or screenshots it and posts it saying it was their meme.
Me: Did you see Alex's meme? It was funny as shit!
Dan: That was my meme! I made that!
Me: stolen meme.....
