It’s taught as a step down statement, meaning that it allows for one to aggressively state something while effectuating an apology with its underlying meaning. It was discontinued from use in familial therapy sessions due to its regular use in inappropriate situations.

Parent: You didn’t finish your chores and you stole from the offering plate at church. You’re grounded for a month.
