Basically, NO ONE knows what emo is anymore. Some say it's people who want to kill themselves/hate life/etc., but those are just people who, plainly, are depressed and upset with life. Doesn't mean they're emo. And there's also the emo dressing style. Seriously, what the hell? Just because you wear skinny jeans and black-rimmed glasses doesn't make you emo, either. As for me, I say that emo is a certain type of music, with meaningful lyrics about past mistakes and failed relationships with others, and emotions (any kind of emotion) Happy, sad, angry, jealous, etc. But hey, who's right about the "word" emo now-a-days?

From 2000 on emo came back (harder than ever!). When emo came back, it's true meaning was somewhat lost and certain fasets of the true emo culture changed. "Emo" now is said to stand for "emotional" and many bands that emo people listen to are a very washed down, pop, sad version of punk. Such modern emo bands are Dashboard Confesional, and Further Seems Forever. With it's change of meaning modern emo's act very emotional. Often they show signs of depression, wearing black and having a very pessimistic view of the world.

At The Disco and My Chemical Romance (among others). Usually will never admit being emo and will become increadibly defensive and occasionally violent when called emo (usually embarassing themselves because they have a blood loss due to too much cutting).
