"by the way" conversation

Small talk used in bars to meet somebody. Comes off as non-threatening and casual, but effective for breaking the ice. Usually involves the discussion of some benign third party person or situation; i.e. the bartender, the weather or extremely drunk bar patrons.

Korey used his "by the way" conversation skills to introduce himself to two girls up at the bar in NYC over the weekend.

Inspired by the use of this phrase in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, "buy-the-book" is used to communicate to the other party that there is a third party listening and disinformation is necessary.

When Amanda called her husband on speaker phone with her kids in the car, she asked for the by-the-book answer for whether the amusement park was open. He, of course, said it was closed.
