The word was set to differentiate the poorer and far more unstable neighbouring countries on the upper portion of latin america, such as Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and etc.
The word's definition is said to include countries such as: Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, although Uruguay and Paraguay are occasionally left out.
