This expression is usually said or depicted when stories start with a main character who lacks the quality and traits of a main character.

He was the weakist in his class but after INSERT CHEAT PLOT/MONTAGE he became the strongest and nobody doubted him anymore. Finally after 12 episodes in and getting smack talked, MC is MCing!
