A meme that has already past its best before date but is still being used.
While it can often refer to meme templates, you are most likely to come across one in the form of a YouTube comment. In fact, text-based memes are the ones that get overused and abused the most often.
When a meme is overused, it is most likely valued for its disposability and effortlessness in conveying a message (rather than trying to come up with something original).

A meme that had its greatness, then just died out. But for one brief time, it becomes cool again. Usually before it becomes stale.

A person who cares so much about the correct usage of memes, that s/he gets reduced to an incoherent rage when they hear one used wrongly
Person 1: Phil really is an ass-hole. I said "Sounds legit" instead of "Seems legit", and he started screaming at me and frothing at the mouth
Person 2: Really? Sounds like Phil is something of a meme-iac

Sometimes a meme about a work, that wasn't originally included in the original, attracts the attention of the author responsible for that artwork, and the original author decides to actually include it in their future artwork.
One webcomic that made new comedy out of old Garfield strips by removing the title character so it seemed that Jon was a lonely delusional weirdo, was made into a book actually endorsed by writer Jim Davis, too, and complete with several Garfield Minus Garfield actually made by Davis himself. This is an excellent example of an ascended meme.

A very sad meme, usually stated as a response to something bad happening in the present, past, or future. This saying is a derivative of "Sad Face".
Person 1: I failed my exam bro.
Person 2: Sad meme.
Person 1: We are out of weed.
Person 2: Sad memeeeeeeee.
Person 1: I think we are going to lose the game.
Person 2: Sad meme, why do you think that?
