I would add to discolemur's definition that also Canadian people seem to use this term to refer to soda.

A beverage consisting of carbonated water (originally made with sodium bicarbonate), flavoring, and a sweet syrup. It is called "pop" because of the noise it makes when opened or shaken. It can alternatively be called soda or soda pop.
