Macropragmatics

The study of meaning-in-action across vast, systemic, and cultural contexts. It zooms out to see patterns, norms, and conventions that govern entire societies, institutions, or historical periods. It asks: How do broad cultural narratives, ideological frameworks, and historical forces shape the kinds of communication and behavior that are possible, legitimate, or effective? It analyzes the pragmatic "rules of the game" for a whole civilization or epoch.
Example: Analyzing political discourse in a democracy. Macropragmatics doesn't look at one senator's speech, but at the overarching norms: the expectation of "civil debate," the pragmatic function of filibusters as delay tactics, how the media frame issues, and the deep cultural narratives (like "the American Dream") that speakers must pragmatically engage with to be persuasive. It explains why a communication style that works in a boardroom (direct, data-driven) would fail pragmatically in a religious ceremony, because the macro-context dictates entirely different rules for what makes an act meaningful.

Macrocarbon and Microcarbon

A paired concept for analyzing environmental impact at different scales, derived from the principle of the Carbon Region. Microcarbon refers to the emissions directly tied to an individual's conscious choices and lifestyle—their diet, transportation mode, energy usage at home. Macrocarbon refers to the massive, structural emissions embedded in the systems they are forced to participate in—the carbon cost of the national power grid, the military-industrial complex, the global supply chain for every product in their home. It's the distinction between the carbon you choose to emit and the carbon emitted on your behalf just by existing in a modern society.
Macrocarbon and Microcarbon "He's over there calculating the Microcarbon of turning off his lights, while ignoring the Macrocarbon of the data center required to stream his outrage about the environment. One is a rounding error on the other."

The principle that the patterns and structures of the very large (macrocosm) are reflected in the very small (microcosm), and vice versa. It's the scientific echo of "as above, so below." An atom with a nucleus and orbiting electrons structurally resembles a solar system with a star and orbiting planets. The neural networks in your brain resemble the web of galaxies in the universe. This concept suggests that the universe is a self-similar, holographic system where the laws of physics create repeating patterns at every scale, from the quantum foam to the cosmic web. Understanding the microcosm (like quantum mechanics) often gives you the keys to understanding the macrocosm (like the behavior of black holes).
Macrocosm and Microcosm (Science) "Look at this fractal broccoli. Now look at a satellite image of a forest. Now look at a diagram of your lungs. Macrocosm and Microcosm, baby. Nature's just copy-pasting the same 'efficient branching' design at every scale because it's too lazy to come up with something new."

Macaroni

An old 1700s word for lavish or "drip".
Yankee Doodle went to town
A-riding on a pony,
Stuck a feather in his cap
And called it macaroni.
