A time of gathering and celebration for fans of rock star, actor, and icon David Bowie.
Bowiemas spans the 3 days from January 8th, the day of the Star Man’s arrival on Earth, to January 10th, the day of his ascension back to the stars from whence he came.
Devotees of David listen to his music, watch his movies, share festive food and drinks, sing, dance and have a little cry if they’re overcome by the absence and/or awesomeness of Bowie.
David’s favorite foods may be served, including shepherd’s pie, red peppers, and milk. Cookies in the shape of a Black Star are shared, and also a Bowiemas cake, similar to a British Christmas cake, but with a small Black Star concealed in one of the slices. Whoever gets the Black Star will be blessed with good luck and receives a small Bowie-devotional gift.
Local nightclubs host celebrations at which fans dance in glam rock attire. Fans also meet online, notably at “The Church of David Bowie” on Facebook.
Pilgrims travel to the holy sites of their idol: 463 A23, Brixton, London; 258 Lafayette Street, New York; Hauptstrasse 155, Berlin; Bowie’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and even the island of Bali. Offerings of flowers, candles, glitter, photos, and lyrics are made. Earnest devotees may travel with a large boom box, or even a festively decorated Bowiemas tree.
Whether celebrating collectively or individually, Bowiemas is a time for fans to truly express their love of Bowie, who of course, will be their hero for ever and ever.
