They're rationalizations for what we are doing so that we may more effectively conceal our true motivation from others.
When actions are changed, a convincing alternative explanation apears out of the air, complete with an internal scenario.

Exp:
What do you call a man that wants to live in unhygienic object poverty, dressing like a hobo, cutting all family ties, playing video games and porn all night, molesting his own children and crippling the mother of his children, because he wants “young looking tits and vagina”?
- a man that wants to “be loved for who he is”, ...not what he can provide.
