A derogatory term used as a homophobic slur in the early 20th century. The term originates from the Danish word "bær" (berry) and "mand" (man), and was first popularized in a pejorative context following the publication of Herman Bang's novel "Sommerglæder" (translated as "Summer Joys"). In the novel, the term was used to describe men, often of a heavier build, who would venture into the woods under the pretense of berry picking but were believed to be engaging in homosexual activities.
