A word that has been given many meanings.
1. A sub culture in the category with punk, goth & scene.
They usually have black choppy hair & wear black, especially skinny jeans, they can wear colour & can have their hair a different colour, they prefer to be alone & listen to music (Genre: punk, metal, emo, ) All of these things are not limited & if an 'emo' says that they are then they are most likely a poser.
2. A genre of music, how I usually describe this is that it has guitar riffs, but instead of the usual edgy rock sound they sound more... soft...
Many people hate emo, many people defend it, many people are posers, many people don't understand,
emo is very mis-understood, & is not just someone who cuts themselves, it's a type of person, with specific unique preferences to the mainstream, someone different, & usually from my experience, people who carry out the emo style were previously depressed but got through it.
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH scene
If you call a scene kid emo (or vice versa) you could very well offend them.

Get the emomug. Emo is an abbreviation for 'emotive hardcore punk', or 'emocore', a genre of music and a lifestyle which peaked in the 1990s. Often used nowadays as a classification for people - typically teens - who listen to rock music, are introverted and wear black and maybe have coloured streaks in their hair. Occasionally used as an insult, though emos do not take this as an insult normally.

Get the emomug. Likes dark clothes but doesn't always wear black. Don't always cut themselves. The title isn't always given by someone else sometimes they realize it first. Likes music a lot. Favorite bands are probably Mcr, FOB, P!ATD, and TOP. Almost always accompanied by a black hair tie on their wrist. Almost always seen in skinny jeans, a band t-shirt and beanie. Not completely friendless but usually only a few close friends. Doesn't usually care what other people think. Will wear pajamas to school if they want to. Emo isn't always a bad thing. Emo is short for emotional. Emo is also derived from music. Do not get them confused with goth or scene usually has eyeliner.

Get the emomug. emo: have you ever noticed how emo is in the word emotion well its because people who are referred to as "emo" often have heavy emotions and don't know how to deals with them that end up causing them to do things to themselves but usually they are social floaters who don't give a shit what people think and just hate people for their own reason.

Get the emomug. What people think/see: people who wear a lot of black and have a lot of eyeliner, pretty quiet and a tad scary, probably super depressed and freaky they listen to music about death and want the world to end.
What people don’t see/real definition: people who are most comfortable in darker, less revealing clothes, people who like song that have meaningful/emotional lyrics but also have good music. People who are shunned a lot because they look different even though they aren’t generally that mean/dark.
Sometimes emos are depressed and sometimes they aren’t. (Just like every other categorization of human being.) emos are more in touch with their emotional side and tend to understand deeper more abstract philosophical ideas, not because they’re morbid, but because they’re intelligent and they understand things other people can’t. They often are misunderstood and choose to express themselves with poetry/music.
