Lol is often used as a text notation for laughing out loud. However where im from it is used instead of laughing.

Laugh out loud, however common use is: way to keep a conversation going when one has nothing good to say.

Intention is signalled by how it is written:

d. LOL = that's very amusing; but I still didn't laugh
e. LOL! = not only was that amusing, but I might have actually LAUGHED OUT LOUD
The term has generally been replacd with "haha" to indicate that you found it amusing, as "lol" is often seen as dismissive.

was know as 'Lots of Love' then 'Laugh out loud' now 'I don't give a shit'. My mum thinks it means 'Lots of Love'.
