Get the IRA mug.Irish Republican Army. Formed in 1969 as the clandestine armed wing of the political movement Sinn Fein, the IRA is devoted both to removing British forces from Northern Ireland and to unifying Ireland. The IRA conducted attacks until its cease-fire in 1997 and agreed to disarm as a part of the 1998 Belfast Agreement, which established the basis for peace in Northern Ireland. Dissension within the IRA over support for the Northern Ireland peace process resulted in the formation of two more radical splinter groups: Continuity IRA (CIRA), and the Real IRA (RIRA) in mid to late 1990s. The IRA, sometimes referred to as the PIRA to distinguish it from RIRA and CIRA, is organized into small, tightly-knit cells under the leadership of the Army Council.
Traditional IRA activities have included bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, punishment beatings, extortion, smuggling, and robberies. Before the cease-fire in 1997, the group had conducted bombing campaigns on various targets in Northern Ireland and Great Britain, including senior British Government officials, civilians, police, and British military targets. The groups refusal in late 2004 to allow photographic documentation of its decommissioning process was an obstacle to progress in implementing the Belfast Agreement and stalled talks. The group previously had disposed of light, medium, and heavy weapons, ammunition, and explosives in three rounds of decommissioning. However, the IRA is believed to retain the ability to conduct paramilitary operations. The groups extensive criminal activities reportedly provide the IRA and the political party Sinn Fein with millions of dollars each year; the IRA was implicated in two significant robberies in 2004, one involving almost $50 million.

Get the IRA mug.IRA: Irish Republican Army
A guerrila army situated in ireland, whose operations have been concentrated in the occupied north of ireland and on the foreign British mainland.Their main aim is to secure a united ireland which would involve driving out the british forces from the island of ireland. they had the support of many citizens of ireland mostly from the catholic nationalst community.
The organisation follows in the footsteps of a long line of armed revolution in Ireland, including a revolution mounted by Theobald Wolfe Tone, the father of republicanism, who himself was a protestant.
During an expansive campaign in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's the IRA was able to secure large quantities of weapons from the US, the Balkans and Libya. they used these weapons to mount the largest bombing campaign ever seen on the british mainland and gain many concessions and drive the british establishment to the bargaining table.
During this time the organisation was able to become the most powerful organisation in Ireland, basically destroying all loyalist organisations in the North and killing hundreds of british soldiers. They also managed to kill two intensively trained SAS soldiers, a major achievement for a volunteer force.
The IRA always has taken a hard line against drugs and has been known to kill dealers and importers. they have never used drugs to increase power or funds, unlike all loyalist groups.
Recently, after achieving their utmost with violence, the organisation have decided to follow a strictly political path. Support has grown through this initiative and they will achieve a united ireland through this method.
weapons have been decommisioned to secure representation of republicans in the government. Despite this, the IRA has the support, if ever there was the need for another armed campaign in Ireland and could wage war indefinitely.

Get the IRA mug.The IRA were once a proud organisation who stood up against military oppression and dreamt of a United Ireland. However, up until recently, grew into a bunch of evil thugs who thought bombing innocent people and using then as shields from bullets was an acceptable means of warfare.
They were intelligent, as they knew every nook and cranny of their homeland and how to disappear easily after engaging the security forces. However, this was the only tactic they were reasonably good at, as they could not wage open warfare on the enemy, as was proved on occasions when they tried and were slaughtered.
Fortunately, the British Special Air Service were able to wage a relatively successful counter-terrorism campaign on them. This includes The Loughall Ambush in 1987, when an entire bombing division of the East Tyrone Brigade were wiped out, and Operation Flavius in Gibraltar, 1988, when four undercover bombers were killed.

We should admire the days of the Old IRA and the Irish War of Independance. They were a formidable enemy. They stood up for what they believed in and fought herorically against one of the most well-trained armies in the world. But the Provisional IRA are terrorists. A whole world apart from their ancestors.
