the only mainstream indie band is arctic monkeys. and thats only cos they originated from real indie stuff.
modern indie bands: the films, llibertines, babyshambles, maximo park.
pete doherty is the perfect indie, he's likable yet doesnt get on with anyone and is himself.
indie music has meaningful lyrics, yet isnt depressing like emo.
if you have any idea wat good music is, you'l love indie.
although this definition didnt actually say what indie is; there is a reason for that. indie isnt anything, its just people or music being watever it wants to be and not caring what anyone else thinks of that.

Get the indie mug.A preteen/teen (age between 11-16), who is both indie and goth. They will dress indie (in their own independant style), and probably have indie hair too. But their style will be darker than most indie kids. They will usually listen to:
Indie, alternative, rock, metal, alternative metal, screamo, gothic rock etc...
Most indie's, goth's and indie goth's are VERY against emo's/scene's. This is understandable because emo's/scene's "stole" indie style and turned it black. E.g.:
-> Converse
-> Black skinny jeans
-> Band tees
Plus, their used to be loads of good screamo bands, that felt the need to go emo to make money.
So NOT to confused with emo. They listen to indie and metal. Nothing wrong with that. As an indie/goth myself, I get along with indie/goth's, and just indie's and just goth's.
But if there's one thing none of us can stand, it's emo's/scene's.

People expect goths to just NEVER talk, and be depressed, but they actually talk a lot and are generally happy people who have a negative attitude on the world, but are still happy.
So indie goth's are people who don't really care about much except music, who take a negative attitude on the world but are happy and independant.

Indie is short for Independent. Nothing more nothing less. In the sense in which I am typing I am referring to music, for the sole reason of mis-interpretation. First things first. You cannot like "indie" music. I mean... I guess you can. But it is unreasonable to say. Thats like saying you only like music distributed by Tooth and Nail records for example... Indie is not a genre; no matter what the media wants you to believe... Now. What most people will consider "indie" music is alternative rock. Or mellow acoustic. Or dance. But in reality "indie" can be hardcore death metal, reggae, rap ect... Also. You can't be "indie".
Okay. I guess I will name some bands that someone might consider "indie" even though I'm completely contradicting myself...

Get the Indie mug."Indie" stands for "Independent". They listen to indie music, and often use ridiculous words like "raw" and "organic" to describe it. They seem to think their music is different from everyone else's when in fact it is the same.
Indie kids wear clothes from second hand shops, have an unfounded fascination in things like cassette tapes and vinyl, and often wear thick rimmed glasses.
The thing that makes their music "indie" is a mystery. Any type of music can be indie- rock, rap, bluegrass, etc. As long as the audience consists of old plaid and tight jeans, it is indie.
Indie kids get off on listening to music that nobody has heard of.(often times, it is some random crap they found on myspace) If they tell you their favorite band, and you have heard of it, they have failed as an indie kid.

Get the integration mug.Generally music with a more obscure sound. Indie music consists of musicians who aren't in it for the big label, but to make good music, or music they like. Genres include folk, rap, electronica, acoustic, etc.
Anybody who considers Modest Mouse to be an indie band is incredibly ignorant.
The genre should not be mistaken with "indie kids". (Who the hell labels themself as an indie kid, huh?)
Indie music doesn't ONLY consist of acoustic guitar, whiny voices, and shouldn't be mistaken with teenagers who wear black rimmed glasses, put the Juno album on repeat, wear converse, and hang out at Starbucks.
Try some Gregory and the Hawk, he Dreams of Sleep, Robbie Snell, Wesley Bunch.

Its origins can be traced back to punk rock and post-punk of the late '70s and the early '80s. That non-commercial nature could stem from the outwardly ugly sound of the music, the wishes of the artist, the effeminacy of the music, etc. Indie rock is a wide umbrella, covering music, such as country/western or soft rock, that the punks would have rejected.
