Usually this will match a persons sex but in some cases when the brain doesn't get enough hormones at birth the brain can develop to be opposite to a person's sex or be genderless and the person will be born transgender.

Get the Gender transfermug. Gender sequential. A being whose gender changes in a sequential order according to the gender of the person they are currently shagging. If they shack up with a female, the being becomes male; if they shack up with a male, they become female.
If a new gender arises, it is placed at the bottom of the sequential order of genders, and the sequential gender being would follow suit. Example: if partner = male, being = female; if partner = female, being = x; if partner = x, being = male.

Get the Midlife gendermug. I subscribe to the position of gender atheism. I do not believe you have something in your mind called a gender identity that exists independent of your beliefs about it, or is something physical that can be measured. If you're telling me that your gender identity has no physical reality that I can measure or observe, and you're the only one who can tell me about it, then that's a religious belief I do not share with you.
