Emo is used to describe a person thats in this hole called depression. Girls cut their hair short. Guys grow their hair out. They also wear black and band merch. They also listen to bands like My Chemical Romance, Twenty One Pilots, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, etc. Some emos cut and kill themselves.

However, the genre has seen a sort of revival in recent years, with bands like The Hotelier, Sorority Noise and Foxing getting more popular in indie circles.
The word is also used to describe a certain lifestyle, however this is not related to actual emo music.
