emo

A term once used to refer to a certain style of music in the late 90s, then to a teenage stereotype in the early 2000s, nowadays used to make insecure people defensive (hence the many definitions trying to dissuade people from its common usage). For the teenage stereotype, "emo" connotates angst and nihilism; a fetishization of life's unfairness or meaninglessness; Reddit atheism without a god to denounce. This may be accompanied by attitudes and appearances reflecting a teenager's expected capacity for such extreme ideas.
Hamlet and Shadow the Hedgehog have one thing in common; they're both emo kids.

emo

1. Someone who is overly-emotional, usually in a negative way
2. Chronically and outwardly depressed

Someone can be called emo if they have at least two of the following qualities: always dress partially or fully in black (because it "reflects the color of their soul"); wear very tight and restricting clothes (constantly in contact with the skin, because they are usually deprived of any physical contact with other people such as hugs); seem to talk mostly about how sad, unfair, or hopeless their life is; cut their own wrists; or attempt to express their emotions through excessive amounts of boring dark art or poetry (also includes music).
Emo kid: "Linkin Park and Three Days Grace are my favorite bands I feel like theyre the only ones who get my life"
Normal kid: "Dude, they are Emo incarnate. You need to get laid..."
