winner-take-all

The type of system used in the electoral college in all states except for Maine and Nebraska. Instead of the winner-take-all system, Maine and Nebraska have split electoral votes. The battleground districts are Maine's 2nd Congressional District (ME-2) and Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District (NE-2). Maine is a blue state while Nebraska is a red state. In the electoral college, all 50 states have electoral votes and there are 538 total votes but 270 are needed to win. If a presidential candidate wins the popular vote in one state, that state's electoral votes go to the winner. The losing candidate receives none.
Why is the electoral college a winner-take-all system even though there are faithless electors?
