third street diner

A diner located on the corner of third and main in downtown Richmond Virginia. The building was once used as a hospital and the basement was used for a morgue. That was all long ago. Now it is known for it's 24 hour service, cheap drinks, and good food. Due to the fact that not too much is open 24 hours a day in downtown, it gets a lot of late night business from early birds or late nighters.

I was wasted the other night so I walked to the third street diner and got a bacon cheeseburger. It was a tasty burger.

Nighthawks at the Diner

This 1975 live studio album was Tom Waits' third release. It begins with a bit of sax, percussion and an intro by Waits. He's a bit of a stage comedian, telling jokes between songs, and giving little introductions before them. The music is beautiful, as with all of Waits' live work. One of the best is Better Off Without A Wife, all about a stag and his love of being alone. Playing after that is Nighthawk Postcards, which is another great story, this time of a journey through a town past dark.

Phantom Diner

A restaurant or coffee shop you half remember visiting while drunk. In most cases the location of the restaurant is mistaken. If a drunk forgets something and tries to retrieve it the following day it will seem as though the restaurant was an apparition, as there is no restaurant where they believe they ate.

Its called a phantom diner because the scenario is very similar to a popular ghost story genre - a man has en experience with strange characters at a bar, on a ship, on a train, only to return the next day to find the setting has been abandoned for many years, or is just gone.
