The word is derived from the show Portlandia, and therefore incorrectly assumes residents of the town are called Portlandians, instead of the proper term of Portlanders. This incorrect term has only surfaced about 10 years ago, and is sometimes used by native Portlanders to refer to transplants who moved here from somewhere else, especially in regards to hipsters.
