White trash

A term developed by African slaves in the early nineteenth century to describe the poor, landless whites with whom they dwelt in the South. According to historian Eugene Genovese, author of Roll Jordan Roll: The World the Slaves Made, slaves developed the term as a way of looking down at poor whites, who lived in abject economic poverty, often in worse conditions than those inhabited by the slaves themselves. Although the poor whites were not considered property like the slaves, the slaves chose to view the so-called "white trash" as inferior to themselves, and members of a social echelon lower than the one they occupied themselves. (Genovese, 20-30; 58) This information does not necessarily change the the contemporary Urban Dictionary definition of the term, but it does change the term's origins and etemology. Rather than being a term made by the middle and upper class whites to define even the poor of their race as better than all non-whites, "white trash" was a term developed by poor non-whites, Afro-American slaves to contemptuously distance themselves from poor whites, whose social station they believed was even worse than their own.

Tom (a white male) : Look at those poor white people standing in line at the unemployment office, that should be proof enough that not all white people are wealthy.

John (a black male) : Indeed. They are what my great great grandmother would call White trash. I don't agree with the term myself; I'm just telling you what she would have said.

White Trash

White (or any color) people that are typically inconsiderate of those that have to be around them. They are quite often belligerent to the point where making the lives of others miserable is (probably) deliberate. Examples of this behavior are shouting outside and slamming doors at all hours of the day and night, using areas close to your dwelling as their personal workshop, blocking access to your home or vehicles with piles of junk furniture and other debris, having loud obnoxious children and pets that they refuse to control which are sometimes directly hostile toward you, even in your own home (such as having a window open and their dog barking at you whenever you so much get up to move around or talk on the phone). Having pest issues they refuse to resolve and passing them onto you or your dwelling (bed-bugs, fleas (from their pets) When you call them out on above behaviors they get hostile and often physically threatening, usually with a weapon. Make sure you catch them on camera because it will be (all) their word against yours and they are quite happy to lie to the police. I know this kind of worthlessness can apply to anyone of any color but it seems that a subclass of whites have made an art-form of making this their preferred lifestyle. It is not racism as it is something they CHOOSE to be. Anyone that has been unfortunate enough to have white trash as neighbors knows exactly what I am talking about.

Used by many to INACCURATELY describe White peoples they believe not to live up to "their" standards. Also used by the accused "white trash" as a badge of honor and sense of pride as to separate themselves apart from these peoples that believe them to be of a lower class.
