A true homage to old-school hockey, the "Hair Skate" is commonly defined as the following:
i) A skating session in which the ice time is free of charge, and which generally involves small groups of hockey players taking part in a game of shinny.
ii) The act of applying grease to one's hair prior to the aforementioned game of shinny. May also refer to the application of grease to one's hair prior to any form of hockey, organized or otherwise. The name for this session is derived from the principle that asserts the application of the aforementioned grease to one's hair will enable one's hair to flow gracefully in the wind as they glide down the ice.
