Ed Ricketts

A close friend of the Nobel/ Pulitzer Prize winning author John Steinbeck. He was a marine biologist and an outspoken pacifist who believed in Ghandiesque principles that "An eye for the eye makes the whole world go blind".
Ed Ricketts' friendship with Steinbeck is documented in the non-fiction novel "The Log from the Sea of Cortez", and many classic Steinbeck characters are based on him: such as 'Doc' in "Cannery Row", 'Doc' in In Dubious Battle, 'Jim Casy' in "The Grapes of Wrath", and 'Doctor Winter' in "Moon is Down".

Note: all the characters Ricketts inspired are reserved, contemplative, and share an admiration for strong character and internal courage.
