Its origins are unclear but it is believed to be from the depths of Detroit. It's usually in reference with Chevrolet Cavalier Z from the years 1983 to 1988. It is believed that the word means to drop the blocks as in a suspension modifications, but that has been disputed greatly.

The move involves a girl ('the dropper') dancing up to a guy ('the dropee'), then dropping suddenly to the floor and slowly climbing back up to standing position using the guy's clothing as support.
