The word "bum" is old hobo jargon for a hobo who don't do any honest work for his food and shelter, and as a such is poisoning the towns and communities for hobos with well intention.
"crumbs" is hobo slang for lice, which is something you for obvious reasons don't want to catch, especially if you are a hobo with enough concerns already in regards to everyday survival.
When the two traits are combined you get a character you certainly don't want to be a travel companion with, A person who will leech off your efforts and only give you a head-lice infection in return.
