'Mouse' derives from Mickey Mouse, thus to take the mouse is to take the mickey. Taking the mickey is to make fun of something/someone or to take the piss.

A cartoon mouse from the late 1920s made by Walt Disney. First appearence was in 'Steamboat Willie' and his fame still goes on. He is the main mascot for Disney and can be seened pretty much everywhere. Has a girlfriend/wife named Minnie Mouse (Short for Minerva) He has other friends named Donald Duck, Goofy, Daisy, and etc. Has a pet dog named Pluto which is also his best friend.
