Most OC giveaways usually work by people naming and defining the OC.

I came across it in the 1950s when working in the Electricity generation field. it means "Out of Commission" as in not working. Applied to machinery, electrical, hydraulic, and many other systems or pieces of equipment, large or small. It does not mean “original content” and “original character.” Those are newbie definitions.
