"I consider myself a feminist, you know, belief in equal rights for men and women."
"That's so cute!"
"Are you saying that feminism is just 'cute'?! You know, it's people like you that make women feel oppressed. Women should have rights, regardless of what's downstairs."
"Wtf did I do?" *Slowly backs away*

feminism

A umbrella term used to define a huge range of idea's around women's rights. The belief that misogyny (the hatred of women) is wrong.
If you look at the other definitions of this word that are written by misogynists, you may see why feminism is so important.

Feminism

Feminism is the belief and movement for women’s equal rights. Many of you may think women have “equal” rights however that is far from true. Women, for one, get paid $.75 for every $1 a man makes. Second, women not only are extremely sexualized by society, but they are pressed to believe that it is supposed to be that way. Women are taught they must shave, wear an uncomfortable bra, wear makeup, and look a certain way. How is this right? It’s true men also have standards to live up to but they are far less forced and strict as standards for women are. Third, we are told to be sexy and hot then we are slut shamed for it. Men constantly beg women for pictures or sex then go tell their friends about it and slut shame them. Fourth, women are scared of men. We constantly live in fear of walking alone or in small groups of girls at night, or going to the club and being picked up or groped when we don’t want to be, we feel scared when there is a noise and we’re home alone, and so many other instances. This is NOT okay. We should feel free and safe in our country and the comfort of our own homes however we constantly hear of raping and kidnappings and it makes us never feel secure. Constantly men use feminine qualities as an insult. We need to show that women are strong and we won’t put up with this. That is just a small reason feminism exsists. Join to movement to change all of that, to make life easier and better for women, and to show everyone is equal.
Examples:

1. The other day I was in a story and there was a set of posters. The posters contained some male detectives (fully clothed) and a female detective (only in her bra and underwear) they sexualized her in that way just to sell the posters.

2. Ever heard “you run like a girl.” Or “we’re talking about sports since you’re a girl you wouldn’t understand.” Or “not bad for a girl” or even “boys will be boys” some people still say things such as, “that’s a man’s job” or a specific job cannot be done by a women because in the past (when blacks people were slaves and everyone thought the world was flat) only men did it.

3. Fun (not so fun) fact, every week at least one woman is hospitalized because of a family member or a former partner. Every 3 hours a woman is hospitalized because of domestic and family violence.

4. Rape victims often are reprimanded by people saying, “well they were asking for it,” by asking what they were doing out late at night, and slut shaming instead of hating the rapist for being a sick pervert who deserves life in prison.

Women ARE NOT toys. Women ARE NOT property. Women are strong, independent HUMAN BEINGS who deserve to be treated equal to any man. Feminism is a real movement for a real problem that needs to be solved.
