Example:
"I dont want to work today because I have neckpain"
Ok, you should probably still do it and fix your neckpain later as best as you can.
What is not a valid excuse? This is where the 'moral' bit comes into play.
Technically the old definition would call this an excuse too:
"I dont want to kill those 15 starving children because I dont like killing".
But a real excuse in my humble opinion is an excuse only when you duck out of doing something that would be the *right* thing to do - something you should be doing for a higher purpose.

Get the excuse the fuck out of memug. An example of excuse clouding is easily seen in terms of a fictitious conversation:
Jack: "Want to go to the movies?"
Jill: "I don't have any money." (When in reality she just doesn't want to go see that movie).
Jack: "I'll pay for you."
Jill: Some other argument other than just saying she doesn't want to see that movie.
Jack: "Want to go to the movies?"

Get the Excuse Cloudmug. Largely used in romance, excuses people give rejecting someone by overcomplicating their baggage into something valid on a positive spin. This is usually overcompensating for their romantic insecurities
She gave him a comfort excuse turning him down by telling him she's older and divorced and that he's younger and has his life ahead of him because she fears that her baggage will get in the way of enjoying the romance.
Usually in this case mora than not, the person is really rejecting themselves before they get rejected in the long term
