Originally a word for 1930's Jazz enthusiasts; the word "Hipster" has since been applied to a vaguely defined and semi-mythical counter-culture movement allegedly centered around socialising at overpriced coffee shops and listening to bands that You have never heard of.
Few of these peculiar hominids have ever been seen by man, and most footage is unverifiable.
As of the early 2010's the word also became an acceptable way of insulting anybody who's tastes differ to your own, in any way, and as a result, has completely lost all meaning.

Ex 1.
So I drove up to Portland last saturday looking for Hipsters;
I thought I saw one, but it was just some regular guy in a flannel shirt.
Ex 2.
Todd: I was listening to the new GY!BE and Rachael told me to 'turn that Hipster crap off'
Howard: Haha, what does that even mean?

(1) Hipster's are people who follow the latest trends.
They've been a contradiction all along.
(2) People who don't go by the things society and the media tells them to do.

A person who believes (1) they are too unique to exist, and (2) they are not a hipster, or (3) they are a hipster, but only because of the irony.
Detests Corporate America, except when it benefits them., eg., their Ebay vintage store, or their collection of iProducts used to update their EBay vintage store. Loves and/or hates bands you will never hear of. Lives in, or wants to move to, an urban conclave of hipsters, even though, when asked, that's NOT where they live or want to live.
Feels that the majority of everything in society sucks, except for their world view, which is actually nothing more than their self-created narcissistic oasis, and which consists primarily of their obsession with their genitals/libido, and other hipsters they let in their club.
Very similar to pre-pubescent Goths and Indies, but older, and with better self esteem and different fashion. Is basically unattractive, yet maintains the hipster mystique because it somehow gets them just enough random sex to maintain the hipster mystique. Does/doesn't click to review this definition because of the irony.

"OK fine, I AM a hipster, but only because it's mainstream to say I'm NOT and definitions are just labels that society puts on reality", grabs iPad, storms out of fair market vegan taquito joint, lights an American Spirit, and rides fake vintage cruiser home to loft above indie used bookstore in the Mission.

Hipsters are kids, usually in high school, who think they're all that and a slice of cake. Usually they peak in high school and spend the rest of their lives playing the guitar they thought would make them millions one day. Hipsters like to aviod answering questions by using the phrase "just chill." like they think that solves anything. These kids also like to find the worst music in the world, post all these links on facebook of these "great" songs and tell everyone else in the world that their opinion in music sucks. Usually hipsters hate dubstep, and practically worship indi music. A hipster is supposed to stand out in a croud, be different, wear different things. But all hipsters are the same: denim on denim wearing, anti mainstream, guitar playing, indi listening idiots.
You: "Should we get chinese for lunch or mexican? i really could go for chinease but Lisa thinks more people would like mexican. What do you think?"
Hipster: "we should just chill."
Hipster: "we should just chill."

A Hipster is a person who commonly rejects everything "mainstream" and pretends to be a non-conformist.
This would involve not purchasing from name brand chains and supporting "indie" chains.
This would include music by no-name bands as well.
This large group of non-conformists are in a group of conformists trying to be non-conformist?

Louis: Is that Zoe over there?
Kiko: Yeah. What a Hipster.
Louis: Why do you say that?
Kiko: Did you see her profile picture? She's eating grain. In a field. With "Indie" clothes.

White middle class from the suburbs. They are the one who was responsible for making gentrification thrive in poor neighborhoods whereby it drove out the poor, hard working class. The one that destroyed the very social and cultural fabric of New York City. For those Hipsters that don't find it to be true will immediately give a thumbs down. However, ask a Native New Yorker about how they feel about it. Better yet ask the Germans in Berlin.
