Whether the goal is to turn someone into a product purchaser, a dogmatic activist, or a political operative, a variety of suggestive PSYOPS are employed to engage and direct someone's thoughts and actions. Without even recognizing how it happened, they wake up one morning ready to buy something they don't need, or ready to take action on behalf of a cause or a political party. No longer in control of their own choice-making, they are now at the mercy of the individual and/or organization that is funnelling their consciousness.
My friend eventually realized that someone with access to his devices was funnelling his consciousness for nefarious purposes.
