the scuttlebutt: rumor/gossip. It's actually a nautical term for a cask used to serve water for immediate consumption. Sailors would gossip around the scuttlebutt while congregating for a drink of water.

Sailors always congregate around the scuttlebutt to find out the latest gossip on the ship!

It is actually a very kind creature despite it's strange appearance. Urban myths telling of its fierceness are largely untrue. Believed to have been killed by Stan Marsh a few years a go.
