Fujoshi is a japanese word that describes female BL readers. It directly translates to "rotton girl" or "girl with a rotton thought process." In the early 2000s, it was used as an insult for m/m shippers of non-m/m works, and was a misygynistic term to deem these women unfit for marriage. However, japanese women have reclaimed that word to use as a self-deprecating term, today it is an innocent word that describes female BL readers.
Please keep in mind, fujoshi does NOT equal fetishizer and doesn't mean "woman who fetishizes gay men by reading BL," like many westerners like to say.

Person A: "Eww. You're a Fujo? That's disgusting, you fetishize gay men!"
Person B: "Yes, I'm a Fujoshi, but thta isn't a bad thing! I don't fetishize gay men and the word fujoshi does not have a negative meaning at all! There is nothing wrong with liking gay romance."
Person A: "Oh okay, thank you for telling me."
(Please don't be pussy and listen to people who try to educate you on a topic they have better sources for, like Person A does, thanks. :)

In interpretation, a rotten woman who consumes the content of boys love. Though reading boys love as a women does not necessarily mean you are a fujoshi ( fu-joe-shee ) It is the way you behave around it. If you get off to boys love or as some like to call it ‘ yaoi ‘ ( ya-oh-we )then you are not a fetishizer ( but it’s still wrong ). Though, if you want to be in a relationship with a gay man as a woman then you are. This word has been misunderstood humongously and has been used in the wrong ways. Being a fujoshi is not something to boast or be proud about. Being a fetishizer is also not something to be proud of. The lesson here is that it is okay to read boys love as a woman, but it is not okay to be a fujoshi.
These are not actual terms, I made them up so please don’t confuse them + I will give details. n/n: no name ,
a/n: anonymous name, n/nf: no name fetishizer
n/n: Hey, I’m a woman who likes reading boys love. Is it okay to call myself a fujoshi?
a/n: No, that isn’t a word you should use to describe yourself with unless you are one. The meaning is ‘ a rotten girl ‘ which means a woman who enjoys reading boys love and does dirty things with it ( masturbate ).
n/n: Oh! I did not know that! Thank you for informing me, but I can tell you that I am just a woman who reads boys love for the plot!

n/nf: Oh, but I do masturbate to it because the men are so rough! I wish I could date a gay man to have sexual intercourse with them. So it’s okay to call myself a fujoshi?
a/n: The term fujoshi does sit kind of right with you if you do sexual stuff by reading boys love, but you still do not want to have that label. What you are doing is fetishizing gay men and their sexual relationships. Which is not okay.

Jap. 腐女子. literally: rotten girl. A pun, based on the homonymous term for woman (jap. 婦女子). Ironical self-description by readers of Yaoi Dōjinshi. The female counterpart to the male Otaku.

I'm a fujoshi.

“Fujoshi”, the romanization of the word 腐女子 (“rotten woman”), is a homophonic pun with the word 婦女子 (“respectable woman”). It was originally created by men and used against women, saying that they (the women) "weren't suitable for marriage", as said women enjoyed BL (Boy’s Love), a japanese genre of fictional queer media. The term then was reclaimed by said women and now simply means "a woman who enjoys BL". Male and gender-neutral/non-binary equivalents of the word were also created ("fudanshi", for men who enjoy BL, and "fujin", for gender-neutral/non-binary people who enjoy BL).
In the western part of the world, however, the "fujoshi" term is being falsely accused of meaning "(straight) women who fetishize queer men", thus ignoring the misogynistic and homophobic origins of the word, as well as ignoring how many people discovered themselves as queer men through reading/watching BL.

Emma: "That episode from Sasaki to Miyano was so cute! You really need to watch this anime."
Hana: "Sasaki to Miyano? I have already watched it. I didn’t know you liked it, too! Are you also a fujoshi?"
Yuri: "My sister was called a fujoshi today on the internet, do you know what that means?"
Alex: "As far as I know, fujoshis are girls who like that gay comics from Japan."
Yuri: "Strange. That user who called her a fujoshi seemed to be insulting her. Why would liking some gay romance be bad? And why is there even a word just about liking a certain type of romance?"
