Antarctica is an extremely cold place, and quite possibly the most remote area on
Earth. It is located in the Southern Hemisphere, spans all lines of longitude on a world
map, and is the only continent with no permanent human population. At any given point during the year, there are anywhere from ~1,000-5,000
people there working as researchers for various world governments, such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Argentina. During the Summer (December-February, in the Southern Hemisphere) and Winter (
June-August), the continent experiences 24 hours a day of sunlight (midnight
sun) and darkness (polar night), respectively.
