The game served as a last-ditch effort to continue the franchise following its predecessor's decline in popularity and resulting demise. Due to a combination of these factors as well as competition from social media and other forms of children's entertainment, the game was a commercial failure. Club Penguin Island, and with it the Club Penguin franchise, was discontinued in December 2018.
