Blue canoe

The excellent early Elton John song “Where to Now St. Peter” is about a mortally wounded Civil War Confederate (southern) soldier who takes a “blue canoe.” This means he got shot by a Union (northern) soldier. The Union soldiers wore blue uniforms, they were nicknamed the blues. The Confederate soldiers wore gray uniforms, they were nicknamed the grays. A blue canoe is a round or volley fired by a Union soldier.
“I took myself a blue canoe” is the first line in “Where to Now St. Peter.”
